Here at Qqs, we are so pleased and excited to share with you an amazing new project that’s looming on the horizon!
Many of you are already aware of the incredible ripple effect we’ve seen since Norm Hann and the StandUp4GreatBear expedition arrived in Bella Bella several years ago. Norm has fanned the spark of youth and community engagement in the issue of tankers and pipelines, and inspired an amazing team of students to take a hands-on interest in the sport of paddleboarding!
What could be more powerful and hopeful than young people taking a stand for their identity, community, culture and home? Embracing new challenges as they find creative ways to become leaders in their own right?
Here are three things you can do to support them today:
1. Learn about what they’re doing, and how a new film (“A Hand to Stand”) is going to help!
“In the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, the woodworking class of Bella Bella High School is challenging threats by doing something new. Like many First Nations communities, Bella Bella is faced with difficulties that threaten their prosperity, culture, and way of life.
“A Hand to Stand” is a short film and trans-media journey to document and share their story, as this group of teenagers craft their own Stand Up Paddleboards.
Blending tradiitonal knowledge of woodworking and the coast, and applying it to a modern sport, this is an inspiring group. This is the future of hope.”
2. Make a donation. At this scale, every dollar has a huge impact, and you can feel confident that your contributions are helping to effect real change! Plus, there are some amazing incentives for donations at different scales!
3. Share this story to help build a community of support for the amazing work being done right here on the coast!
YOU can be part of the movement and voice that empowers this amazing act of leadership and storytelling. Stand up with the students and help tell the story of a brighter future to come!
